At Tru we are as clean and as green as possible. We aim to benefit your health without harming the environment. When you visit our facility you will be breathing the cleanest air technology can provide. The air is kept at a steady rate of humidity at all times. This will ensure no mold will ever develop in our studio; the last thing you want to breathe in while striving to attain optimal health. You will not be exposed to harmful chemicals commonly found in cleaning products. We use environmentally friendly essential oils such as tea tree, lemon grass, peppermint and lavender. You will be actively reducing your carbon footprint simply by attending a yoga class at Tru Hot Yoga, and this is how:

We Use Low V.O.C. Paint

Typical household paint contains up to 10,000 chemicals, of which 300 are known toxins and 150 have been linked to cancer. Some of the most harmful chemicals found in paint are volatile organic compounds, or VOCs.

VOCs are unstable, carbon-containing compounds that readily vaporize into the air. When they enter the air, they react with other elements to produce ozone, which causes air pollution and a host of health issues including breathing problems, headaches, burning, watery eyes and nausea. Some VOCs also have been linked to cancer, as well as kidney and liver damage. As paint dries, these harmful VOCs are released into the air at high levels. Although VOC levels are highest during and soon after painting, they continue to seep out for several years. In fact, only 50 percent of the VOCs may be released in the first year. This is especially important in a hot room.

We Have Energy Efficient Lighting

At Tru for U we use Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL). CFLs are four times more efficient and last up to 10 times longer than incandescent lights. A 22 watt CFL has about the same light output as a 100 watt incandescent. CFLs use 50 – 80% less energy than incandescent.

Replacing a single incandescent bulb with a CFL will keep a half-ton of CO2 out of the atmosphere over the life of the bulb. If everyone in Canada used energy-efficient lighting, we could retire 90 average sized power plants. Saving electricity reduces CO2 emissions, sulfur oxide and high-level nuclear waste.

We Use Radiant Heat Panels

Infrared or radiant heating is simply the transfer of heat from a warm object to a cooler object. The heat is a product of a completely safe spectrum of light that is invisible to our eyes. Just as the sun has been heating people here on earth for thousands of years.

Our radiant heating panels are safer and healthier than traditional forms of heat, as they do not rely on fossil fuels, blow dust or allergens, or make noise. They also do not need filters, fuels, ducts or pumps that require seasonal cleaning and maintenance.

Radiant heat panels can save between 20- 50% of energy costs, over conventional heating systems, including gas, oil, electric, and wood burning systems.

We Use Green Cleaning Products

We ensure that all cleaning products used at Tru Hot Yoga are biodegradable, petroleum, and phosphate free.

  • Phosphates

Phosphates are minerals that act as water softeners. Although they are very effective cleaners, phosphates also act as fertilizers. When cleaning products go down the drain, phosphates can be discharged into a river, lake, estuary, or ocean. In lakes and rivers especially, phosphates cause a rapid growth of algae, resulting in pollution of the water.

  • Petroleum-based Ingredients

The key ingredients in most conventional cleaners are the detergents themselves, called surfactants. Most surfactants are petroleum-based. Petroleum is a limited resource whose extraction and refining produce pollution.

  • Biodegradability

Many ingredients in cleaning products are toxic to fish and other animals that live in the water. All cleaning products eventually get washed down the drain therefore it is important to us that we only utilize products that will not negatively impact the environment.

We Have Low Flow Showers and Toilets

Here at Tru, we have installed low flow shower heads. With a conventional shower head, even a modest 10 minute shower can use up to 190 liters of hot water. A low flow shower head can reduce this by half, or more, without sacrificing the “feel” of the shower.

We have also installed low flow toilets. About 30% of all the water used in our homes is used for toilet flushing. Conventional toilets can use as much as 23 liters of water per flush. A low flow toilet reduces this to 6 liters or less per flush.

All our appliances are energy efficient including high efficiency laundry facilities.

We Use Biodegradable/Recycled Paper Products

By using biodegradable paper products throughout our washrooms and studio, our waste is now compostable, releasing valuable nutrients into the soil, aiding the growth of trees and plants.

Using recycled paper products throughout our washrooms and facility, saves trees, water, energy and landfill space compared to virgin paper. Recycled paper production also produces less pollution than virgin paper production.

We Are Helping to Cut back on Plastic Waste

Bottled water produces up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year. We highly discourage the use of plastic disposable water bottles here at Tru.

Mugs are provided for use at our complimentary Tea station. Students are encouraged to use a refillable water bottle at our filtered water bottle refilling stations.

The mats and towels here at Tru Hot Yoga are also made from recycled water-bottles, helping to reduce plastic waste.

We Use Programmable Thermostats

About 42% of energy consumption goes to heating and cooling. A lot of that cost comes from heating and cooling empty (or unused) spaces.

By installing a programmable thermostat we can save anywhere from 10 to 30% on the heating and cooling portion of our energy consumption. Simply by making sure that the space is not being heated or cooled while not in use.

We subscribe to paperless billing

The pulp and paper industry is the single largest consumer of water used in industrial activities and the third greatest industrial greenhouse gas emitter. By subscribing to paperless billing we are cutting back on these effects. Our website has class schedules rather than using printed paper schedules. We also email you receipts for your purchases to reduce paper usage.
